Santee, despite its recent progress, has a history of intolerance and hate. Its nicknames include `Skinhead City`.
Two incidents in the last month raised serious questions about how and why some residents behave so negatively in a small town. Stephen Houlahan, a councilman, took to his lawn and shouted, “Hate won`t be tolerated here!” He also has spearheaded neighborhood-watch programs and given presentations to schools, youth groups, service organizations, and other organizations.
Fire Department
Santee Beach Fire Department employs 54 full-time firefighters – that`s less than one for every 1,000 residents according to a 200+ page review of the department released this week.
According to a city council report, responding times and overtime costs are too long and excessive for their needs. They are searching for solutions to improve coverage by adding more firefighters.
